The problem
At a high-speed commercial printer, ink viscosity depends on the roller temperature. A drift of just 5°C is enough to throw off color registration so that the entire roll has to be scrapped. The floor operator can't be at every press all day, and the press operator can't watch a thermometer.
What was installed
A Thermalpas roller-type sensor reads the press roller in real time, and the reading is fed directly into the press PLC, which modulates heater output continuously to hold the temperature within about a degree.
The outcome
The print shop's color-mismatch reject rate dropped 60%, which it values at $800K a month in avoided returns. Operators can now run more presses with less attention.
