Taiwan Mobile — Neihu Data Center Chiller Thermal Monitoring (No-Drill)

Chiller supply/return pipes need thermal monitoring, but shutdown to drill is impossible (shutdown = overheating = service outage).

01 The Problem

At Taiwan Mobile's Neihu data center, chiller-plant supply and return pipes carry the chilled water that keeps every server cool. The pipes are insulated and welded into the building. Drilling a thermometer port into them isn't allowed — it would interrupt operations and create a leak path that nobody wants near racks of equipment.

The Risk

Chiller supply/return pipes need thermal monitoring, but shutdown to drill is impossible (shutdown = overheating = service outage).

Detection Gap

Manual IR requires onsite patrol — nighttime anomalies go undetected.

02 The OctosX Solution

A Thermalpas pipe-clamp thermometer wraps around the outside of each pipe. No drilling. The team installed them in an afternoon during a scheduled maintenance window. OctosX tracks the temperature delta across the chiller plant in real time and alerts the facility manager if anything drifts.

Sensor & Edge

Thermalpas L-TYPE pipe-clamp adheres directly to pipe exterior (no drilling, no shutdown).

Cloud Logic & Alerting

OctosX Cloud monitors 24/7; integrated into Taiwan Mobile's nationwide NOC dashboard.

03 The Outcome

The data center now has visibility into the chiller plant it never had before — without modifying any pipework. Operations costs have come down through tighter chiller scheduling, and the team has been able to make energy-efficiency optimizations based on real data instead of monthly utility bills.

Field Detection

Within 1 year, 2 chiller-performance degradations detected (supply-temp deviation from baseline).

Quantified Impact

Planned maintenance avoided 2 potential outages (each $3-5M in compensation + reputational loss).
