01 The Problem

At a TSMC 300mm fab, dozens of variable-frequency drives control the giant pumps and air handlers that keep the cleanroom alive. Inside each VFD, a bank of DC link capacitors smooths the power — and when one of those capacitors fails, it doesn't just go bad. It explodes, takes down the entire production line, and forces every tool on that line to reset. Each hour of lost production costs more than $5 million.
