Chemical dosing line demo: clamp-on sensors compared with an insertion thermometer

In a demo on a sulphuric-acid dosing loop, the customer compared clamp-on readings on PFA lines with the mixing tank's insertion thermometer.

The problem

On a chemical dosing loop, the mixing tank's temperature is read by an insertion thermometer at the bottom of the tank, and an instrument in contact with the chemical carries a contamination risk. The customer wanted to know whether a sensor clamped onto the PFA piping could follow the tank temperature instead.

What was installed

Thermalpas clamp-on sensors were fixed onto the PFA dosing line as a demo (TT03 and TT04). In the customer's set-up, TT01 is the insertion thermometer at the bottom of the mixing tank; TT02 (the existing clamp-on sensor) and TT03 (a demo sensor) sit on the loop that runs from the tank bottom through the pump and heat exchanger and back to the tank. 96% sulphuric acid is added in two stages, and after each addition the liquid circulates through the heat exchanger.

The outcome

In the customer's analysis, the three readings rose and fell in step. Their conclusion was that the clamp-on sensor can serve as a synchronous reference for the in-tank temperature, or directly replace the insertion thermometer. The demo sensor TT03 responded better than TT02, and the customer recommended its make and model for further use, noting that a permanent installation needs better fixing and insulation from the surroundings. This was a demo, not a production deployment.
